What is the topic?

Plants cannot run away, they must adapt. Whether drought stress or fungal attack - each stress factor commands a different strategy. Under salt stress, a transporter is formed that dumps toxic sodium ions into the vacuole. This would be meaningless as pathogen response. However, the cell triggers these different responses using the same molecules. How can the cell discriminate? We assume that there exists a code, similar to human language. This code allows the cell to decipher different molecular signals. Can we dissect and exploit this "Grammar of Stress Signalling"? This would contribute to a more sustainable agriculture. Herefore, a close link between fundamental research and application is vital. We therefore work on the important crop plants rice and grapevine.
